My Painting Process

When creating a painting, throughout the process, I am conscious of building layers of color after a preliminary drawing.  What colors will peek through the final layers, what mood am I striving for?  Sometimes it’s a grey, rainy day, a glorious long-range vista, or a soft, quiet woodland scene.

Beginning to work on another Irish Skies pastel

When working in pastel, I typically begin by underpainting washes of acrylic color onto the sanded paper.

However, when I’m working in oils, I apply large blocks of thinned paint onto the canvas, after an initial rough charcoal drawing. This is followed with more thin paint layers, as details are refined and the final composition is set.  During this process, the painting is allow to dry between layers, heightening the intensity of color as each coat is applied.
